TextNow Free/Premium App Frequently Asked Questions

Note: For frequently asked questions about our TextNow phone plans, please click here

What is TextNow?

TextNow is a free calling and messaging service, available on a variety of platforms including Android and iOS, and available through your browser right here on www.textnow.com

How does TextNow work?

TextNow uses your device's existing internet connection to text and call numbers in the US and Canada. The person you're contacting doesn't need to be a TextNow customer in order to receive your texts and calls or send you a text or call.

How do I get a number?

When you first sign up for TextNow, we'll ask you to enter an area code from the US or Canada, and assign you a number from an available pool of numbers in that area code. Please note that TextNow only has numbers within the US and Canada.

If we don't have any numbers available in your area code at the time you sign up, we'll assign a number in the area code closest to you.

I don't like my number - can I get another one?

You can! See our article here for how to release your number and get another number

Can I sign up TextNow outside the US or Canada?

TextNow is available from app stores and online in the US and Canada only.

Is texting and calling free?

Texting and calling is free to numbers in the US and Canada.* Outside the US and Canada, you can purchase international long distance credits to place calls to other countries and territories. And for messaging outside the US or Canada, you can refer to this article for the countries you can text (for free!) through TextNow.

* Please see our Terms of Use for further information.

Do texts or calls show up on my device's regular phone bill?

Absolutely not! TextNow is a VoIP service (voice over IP), and routes the calls through your device's data connection, not through your existing plan's cellular connection.

Does TextNow have any calling restrictions?

TextNow is proud to offer our free calling service, however TextNow reserves the right to restrict call length for high-volume users.

Can I message more than one person at a time?

You can! TextNow supports group messaging - you can add more than one person to a text message from the TextNow app, and your contacts can add you to a group message from their carrier as well.

Does TextNow support emojis?

Absolutely! We have built-in emojis to our TextNow application - tap on the face icon on the messaging page to add an emoji to your text.

Does TextNow have voicemail? How do I access my voicemails?

TextNow does include voicemail. Unlike other carriers, we don't require you to call a special number to access your voicemails - rather, your voicemail will show up like any other text in your Conversations page. Click play on the voicemail to play it back. Click here for more information on the voicemail feature!

What's the difference between the free app and TextNow Premium?

TextNow Premium bundles our most popular calling features together in one place, for a low monthly or yearly cost: call forwarding, phone number blocking, and ad removal. Textnow Premium does not allow you to use the phone without an existing internet connection - for that, take a look at our phones, plans and SIM cards to find the right product for you!

What's call forwarding?

With call forwarding, you can use your TextNow number to route the call to another number in the US or Canada, so that when people call your TextNow number it diverts the call to ring on another phone. The other phone does not have to have the TextNow app installed.

What's phone number locking?

The free version of TextNow will recycle your number after a period of inactivity. If you purchase Premium (or a TextNow phone plan), your current TextNow number won't be recycled for inactivity for as long as you have your Premium features activated.

What's ad removal?

Ad removal will remove the banner ads that run on the free app. Ad removal will last as long as you have you have your Premium subscription activated.

How do I turn on Premium?

Click here for our article on how to turn on Premium

How do I turn off Premium features?

In your TextNow app, tap on the menu button and then tap on Premium. (It should be at the top of your TextNow menu, with a check mark next to it.) From there, tap on Manage Subscription to cancel or modify your subscription to Premium.

iOS users can click here to manage their App Store subscriptions.

Android users can click here to manage their Google Play Store subscriptions

I turned on Premium by accident! How can I get a refund?

Premium features are all billed through either the App Store (for iOS) or the Play Store (for Android). For refund to in-app purchases, contact the App or Play Store (depending on your device).

Can I buy a phone then use it on my text now free app

  • Avatar
    Zach TextNow Support

    Hey Chris,

If you live in the United States you can buy a phone for the free TextNow account. You would have to buy a phone and a plan in order to get started. You can check the coverage in your area by heading over to https://www.textnow.com/wireless/sim-card and clicking the coverage map on the right hand side. You can check both CDMA and the GSM network. If you decide to purchase a phone you will still have the same phone number and username that you currently use on your free app.

Does my real number show up on textnow app to others ?

  • Avatar
    Kristopher TextNow Support

    Hey Paris,

Thanks for the question. When you sign-up for TextNow, you'll choose a number based on your local area code (within the United States and Canada) and this number will be visible whenever you make a call, regardless of if the other person is using TextNow or not.

Furthermore, the TextNow free application will only use the number that was assigned to the account from us, and will not link to the native number assigned to the phone.

    I hope this helps!

    Good morning!

Jazz, I can assure you that your username is not visible to anyone else, and it is the only piece of information on your account that cannot be edited. If you wish to use a new username, I'm afraid that you will have to create a new account. You may, however, edit your email address at any point in time through "My Account" on textnow.com!

Hopefully that helps you out :)

    Hey Null,

My apologies for not having a name to address you by, but if you are experiencing issues with your calling, I would please ask that you contact us either at orders@textnow.com or through one of our live chat agents to investigate this further!

    Hi Mike,

I'm sorry to hear about your contact issues! I'm afraid that TextNow does not keep a log of contacts (we usually pull them from your phone contacts through the mobile app, or you'd have to add them in manually each time on the browser). As such, we are unable to retrieve those numbers for you, and do encourage you to keep your contacts backed up if using our service exclusively.

Please let us know if you have any further questions, and/or concerns!

Does it look like Text Now phones and plans will ever make it to Canada? And if so, when? I really hate the fact that I can't pertake in the sweet phone deals you've always got going on. Also, are the phones that Text Now offers unlocked?

  • Avatar
    Kristopher TextNow Support

@Christina - Thanks for letting us know! Please click here to take a look at our online resources for troubleshooting your SIM card activation!

@Sheena - At this point in time we do not have an ETA but we're constantly working hard to bring TextNow to Canada! To answer your second question, our devices are not carrier locked however, they are loaded with our custom TextNow ROM which is designed for use with our service.

How can I upload deleted messages from my text now account?

  • Avatar
    Kristopher TextNow Support

    Hey Crystal,

Thanks for the question. Currently we have no way of retrieving deleted content from the TextNow application. However, if the messages have expired from inactivity they will repopulate for you once the conversation has been restarted.

How come when i try to use my textnow # to verify my google account. I never get the message that Google is supposed to send with some kind of verification code?!?!

  • Avatar
    Valeria TextNow Support

    Hi Jeremy,

My apologies for the inconvenience! Since we use virtual numbers as opposed to traditional, some systems/apps do not recognize them for verification code purposes. Would you be able to verify your account through an alternative email address instead?

    Thanks for your patience!

How do I logout of other devices that has my account on it

  • Avatar
    Valeria TextNow Support

    Hi there!

Thanks for reaching out, and I'd be more than happy to assist:

Amber- I'm afraid that we cannot support more than 1 active number per account.

Shantel: You will not be able to remotely log out of those devices yourself, however, I have gone ahead and closed all of your open sessions, so you should be able to log into the device(s) you wish to use again in peace :)

I got a call from a number not saved into my contacts. I didnt have time to write the number down before the call ended. Is there any way to see the number again? How do i get to the recent calls that are answered but not showing up online.

  • Avatar
    Tawny, TextNow Support

    Hi Whitley.

The calls should be saved in your TextNow app. It should appear in your call logs as with your previous calls and texts.

Let us know if you need further assistance!
