Does my teen require data to use TextNow?

If your teen is using either of our Wi-Fi Talk and Text services, they must have a Wi-Fi or data connection to send or receive text messages and make or receive voice calls.

Wi-Fi can be used on smart devices or desktops/laptops to connect to the internet.  Wi-Fi connects to a local router that is installed in your own home, or at a publicly available Wi-Fi spot, such as a café or restaurant.

Remember, Wi-Fi has a limited range, so once your teen is outside of that range, Wi-Fi will be dropped and your teen’s device will transition over to cellular data, if available.

Cellular data is dependent on a cell phone carrier and how much data your teen’s plan allows.  While using cellular data, your teen will not need to a router or Wi-Fi connection to access the internet.

If your teen is using any of our Nationwide Talk & Text services, they do not require a Wi-Fi or data connection to send or receive text messages and make or receive voice calls.

Track Data Usage

Information about how much data your teen is using for texting, calling, playing games, or watching videos can be confusing.  You can check your teen’s cellular data usage by going to the settings on your teen’s device.
