How To Use TextNow On Your Desktop

TextNow has recently redesigned our downloadable desktop app, now available in the Windows Store and Apple's App Store, or from our Downloads page. Here's a quick guide to the app and how to use it:

If you've created a TextNow account, you can log into your account on the app directly. Otherwise, create a new account and the app will ask you for an area code and assign you a number in that area code. Once you're logged in, you'll see this:

As the conveniently-placed arrow indicates, you can start messaging right away by clicking on the icon with the pencil, exactly where the arrow is pointing. What you may not know is you can also use the desktop app to place calls, directly from your desktop or laptop!

Click on the dial-pad icon, to the left of the new message icon, to bring up the dial pad:

If you're calling another TextNow user, you can type in their username instead of the number if you like. Otherwise, you can type in any US or Canadian number and call them, absolutely free!

You'll notice on the left-hand side there's a blue menu. Hover your mouse over that menu to pop it out, like this:

textnow on my mobile phone. Came across a small problem. While trying to interact with an automated voice directory
when I use the dialpad . When the option to press "0" to speak to this department. The "0" view is under the "call end " button. So when you try to press the "0 " it ends the call.

Hi Lorrie! Luckily, this is an easy fix :) If you head into your phone's own settings, try to change the font size (to a smaller size), and that should fix the issue!

My old phone number was assigned to a different person now. Is there any way I can retrieve my old messages? I need a conversation history for legal purposes.

hello, i recently had a free text number and it was working perfect, but when i released it and got a new number, i'm no longer receiving text messages anymore what can i do to solve it please?

Hey @Tootie- we don't keep an address book ourselves. If you're using the mobile app, then we would pull in the contacts from your own native contacts/people app. If you're using the browser, you'd need to simply add contacts by messaging/calling them and later editing their information to include their names.

@Cyrine- unfortunately, if you're logged into your account and your conversation history is gone (due to being deleted or recycled for inactivity), then reassigning the old number won't change that. If you need it for legal reasons, then you can have a law enforcement involved to submit a subpoena request so we may recover what we can for their purposes.

@Ruben- Sorry to hear that! Please head over to our live chat support on textnow.com/wireless (they open at 10am EST) so they can take a closer look.

I'm new and have played around a bit on my desktop app only to find that I cannot paste anything into a text message. the app lets me copy a text message but cannot paste it into a new text message and also cannot paste anything that I put into my clipboard into a new text message. Am I doing something wrong?

Hey Phillip! I can't reproduce this issue on my end.

Would you be able to potentially send us a screen recording of this occurring to community@textnow.com ?

When I login on the Desktop app, my username and password are accepted. When I then attempt to send a text message, I get an error stating that verification failed and I have to go through a series of captcha screens, clicking to identify buses, roads, etc. Is there a way to avoid all this captcha stuff?

Hey John! The captcha is there as part of a security measure, and we cannot remove it.

Hey the kindle tablet doesn't have this app how do I go to my messages on browser

  • Avatar
    Valeria TextNow Support

Hey China! Unfortunately, the messaging option is not available on mobile browsers.

So you would only be able to access it on a desktop

also if i want to make a new call on the desktop app to someone who isn't in my contacts, i get an error saying i need to set up microphone, and it has a picture of how you would do that using Flash blah blah. i don't see how to attach a photo here, but i did a full screen snap of the window that the windows 10 desktop app is in showing there is no flash player icon becasue there is no web address bar to have the actual icon available. its an app its not the web. there is no flash player in the bar as shown (i already knew how to enable it in my browser and i know what they are saying) but you guys didn't notice that if my microphone was off (no idea why, i have to assume that the micorphone wasnt off when it loaded as the default). So how in the world is it possible to enable flash? i have gone to the flash in my control panel and plunked in your web address, but again, its an app it won't help. how i enable it on the DESKTOP windows 10 app. you know the one that has been pushed hard since it came out? yes that one... thello, a few things, is there gonna be an update to have SOUND notifications... i keep the window open and the taskbar blinks, but there is no sound. unless i'm sitting on my pc i dont' notice.. I have a sick daughter who's 22 and doesn't drive. i want to have this as a back up and its been so frustrating.
everyone has been telling you the notifiications do not work/ Amd to go full Trump, everyone is talking about how it doesnt' work and if they say it does its fake new.s. i will stop at making up a nasty nickname for anyone... if we say that enough will 40% of us eventually believe we get the notifications? cuz i'm not wishing it true. maybe i should add some hope to the wish and spend more time on that per day instead of reminding you guys of the problems in app.. we keep being told its fixed. i'm not stupid, i would know if it worked or not, so don't say its fixed when I'm capable of telling you otherwise and totally qualified to be the judge of what gives a notification vs. what doesn't' this does not. so frustrated.

@china. google how to get googleplay apps on your Kindle. there will be three or four files you download and boom done. however there are a few ways to do it, look for the one that takes you to an apk website (not an app, its an actual site) i think i got it on howtogeek.com or one of those pc help ones... and i think ilovemyfire.com also tells you how but a titch different. i've done it both ways the first one is far easier. after you download the files and open them in the correct order, that's it... you have the google play icon on your home screen and its like anything else on your kindle a few things aren't compatible but google says it may not work on your device. i've downloaded some thtat work fine tho that warned me... so you can get almost everything in the google store loads onto your kindle and looks and works exactly as the amazon store apps do. you can get text now in the google play store. that's how i do it. i live with my kindle next to me. much more often than a phone. I've even bought apps, which there was concern about that working with this technique, it goes thru pay pal easy peasy no problems for me.

Hey @M Clearwater- The sound notification issues, as well as disabling Flash on the desktop app should be fixed in any versions higher than 1.1.8.

So I would recommend to uninstall the TextNow app from your desktop and download it anew for the latest version to test it out!

    Hi,

I have signed up for TextNow using Google Auth, but my desktop app provides no option to sign in using my Google Account.
    Any advice?

    Thanks!
