Group Messaging with TextNow

What's group messaging?

Group messaging is a way to have more than one person involved in your Conversations. With TextNow, you can add one or more people to the same message thread and talk to all of them together. Here's how!

Starting a Group Message:

Starting a group message is the same on both the TextNow Android and iOS app, and on our web and desktop versions. For simplicity, we're showing you the Android version in these examples:

First step is to start a new text message. You can enter a contact's phone number, TextNow username if they're a TextNow customer, or name or nickname from your contacts stored on your device, as seen below.

Group Management

Each person in the group has access to some group management options. TextNow users can access options through the Options button in the top right-hand corner, like this:

Mute notifications will mute the notifications for this specific group chat. Your other notifications will remain as they are.

Members shows you the current people in the group. 

Open floating chat will open the group message inside a floating chat bubble, so you can access it from any page on your device. 

Set Wallpaper will set the background wallpaper for this group chat. 

Add shortcut will add a shortcut to your device's home screen to allow you to jump right from that screen to the group message.

Export conversation will export the current group conversation to a .txt file, email or other app on your device. 

Block number will block the group message from appearing on your phone. You can leave the group entirely by blocking the number, and then deleting the conversation from your device. 


 

Help! I can't change the group name!

At the moment, group names can only be changed by TextNow users on the iOS platform. 

Help! Group messaging doesn't seem to be working on my device!

Some Android phones may need to have group messaging turned on in their native Messaging apps. On your device, look for an app called Messages, and tap on the Advanced section of the settings menu. You should find a toggle for group messages there, which need to be turned on. Consult your phone's documentation for more information.

    Can we have a definitive answer for how long it takes for a group to expire? The previous answer was "I believe" but when I log in on the website to check my texts the following day it says a group I created yesterday is expired.

    1. Is there any standard in how groups work across different services?
    2. Can you adjust the amount of time it takes for it to expire? Is there a setting anywhere?

    Hey @Jannavi- Unfortunately, we can't support group messages from other carriers at this point in time. You can only have a group conversation by starting one yourself from your TextNow phone number.

    @Mark- Groups no longer expire.

    I have the same issue as Kenzie C did in May. I can no longer see the phone numbers or names of anyone texting in my group text so I can't tell who is talking. I have opened two support cases and been told to go to textnow.com/wireless where there is supposedly a live chat option for troubleshooting. I've never found it. Maybe chat is available only some portions of the day or some days per week? I have never been able to find a live chat option, and offers of "more help" just take you to the option to open another support case. Very frustrated. The Group Text I am referring to is the main reason I pay for TextNow. If I can't get reasonable support in a reasonable amount of time, this is not going to work for me. Thanks.

    We would need to test this out with you in real time, and collect logs. Our live chat support is available on textnow.com/wireless (bottom right-hand side) between 10am-5:30pm EST Mon-Sun!

    Does text now only allow you to select individual contacts? Is there a way to select the contact groups I have saved to my phone?

    Hey @Rixwan- apologies for the delay! Luckily, the number was still available to be reassigned to you. Please note that this is a one time exception, and should you lose your number again in the future, we won't be able to recover it for you.

    @Kami- can you please confirm what error you're receiving, and which browser you are using?

    @LTD- Currently, you would have to input them manually.

    Everytime I go to access my group message it opens and closes with an error message saying it's been inactive for to long. I would still like to open my message. How can I do so being that I didn't delete it?

    Hey John! That sounds like the group message has been recycled for inactivity, and unfortunately, you won't be able to retrieve it.

    but unfortunately , i got conflicted number which is banned socially and it ask for 15 days line. :(

    Is there a way to upload contacts online so that I can send messages through the computer? Also, is there a way to send group messages but set as individual reply? As in, if someone replies it only comes to me and not the whole group? Or will I just have to send a message to everyone individually to avoid the group message replies?
